Unemployment in Switzerland
Unemployment in Switzerland
In Switzerland, unemployment insurance is governed primarily by the Federal Law on Compulsory Unemployment Insurance and Insolvency Compensation (LACI) and the Ordinance on Compulsory Unemployment Insurance and Insolvency Compensation (OACI).In accordance with Article 2(1) of the LACI, employees who are insured under the Old-Age and Survivors' Insurance Act (LAVS) and who are required to pay contributions on income from a dependent activity within the meaning of the LAVS are required to pay contributions and be insured. As the LACI scheme does not have its own contribution collection bodies, contributions are collected by the AVS compensation funds, which collect AVS/AI/APG and AC contributions.Unemployment insurance has several aims, namely to partially compensate unemployed persons for loss of income, to protect them in the event of employer insolvency, to prevent unemployment and to help them back into employment. The law provides not only benefits in the form of daily allowances, but also advice and placement services. Unemployment insurance applies the principle of risk prevention, which consists of avoiding the occurrence of risk as far as possible, for example by providing compensation for reduced working hours in order to maintain jobs and avoid unnecessary redundancies, which are presumably based on a lack of temporary work. It should be noted that if the risk occurs, the insured person must comply with a certain number of obligations. They must be able and entitled to do so (art. 15 al. 1 LACI). Article 16 of the LACI also requires insured persons to accept work immediately in order to reduce their loss (para. 1), unless the work is deemed unsuitable. In your situation, as soon as you become employed, you will be compulsorily insured under the LAVS, and therefore compulsorily affiliated to the unemployment insurance scheme by law, as affiliation does not require any action on your part. In the event of the risk occurring, you will also be required to comply with certain obligations.
